Dec. 4th, 2025 11:40 pmToday I took pictures of icicles and snow, mostly in the house yard, some down the driveway.

Nov. 22nd, 2025 02:18 pmToday is partly sunny and mild. It rained most of yesterday.
I fed the birds. I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches.
I put out water for the birds.
EDIT 11/22/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.
I've seen two squirrels running around the trees.
EDIT 11/22/25 -- I did more work around the patio.
EDIT 11/22/25 -- I did more work around the patio.

Nov. 13th, 2025 05:11 pmToday is partly cloudy and mild.
I fed the birds. I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches.
I put out water for the birds.
EDIT 11/13/25 -- I watered the Egyptian walking onions.
I gathered seeds from the 'Shirley' landrace zinnias that I'm developing.
EDIT 11/13/25 -- I emptied the two spigot jugs of comfrey tea. The pure one had so little liquid that I just dumped it out, and it didn't have much of a smell, just kind of moldy. The one with a handful of leaves decanted 2 gallons of tea-colored liquid fertilizer, and not much noticable smell. That's the one I'm more likely to repeat. I never did get around to testing it because the weather was so sweltering most of the time. But I have it to try out in spring.
EDIT 11/13/25 -- I rinsed out the two spigot jugs and brought them in.
EDIT 11/13/25 -- We walked around the yard looking at places in the prairie garden that need to be mowed, trimmed and carried away a few branches, and now my partner Doug is out mowing.
EDIT 11/13/25 -- We walked around the yard again and got another strip mowed.
I did a lot of work around the patio.
I've seen a fox squirrel running through the trees.
As it is now dark, I am done for the night.

World Migratory Bird Day
Oct. 10th, 2025 08:46 pmWHEN IS WORLD MIGRATORY BIRD DAY? ¿CUÁNDO ES EL DÍA MUNDIAL DE LAS AVES MIGRATORIAS?
World Migratory Bird Day is officially celebrated on the second Saturday in May (May 10th in 2025) as migratory birds journey to nesting sites and on the second Saturday in October (October 11th in 2025) as they return to wintering areas. Because birds do not all migrate at the same time and to provide the opportunity to observe birds on stopover sites as they journey, however, we encourage you to celebrate when the timing is best at your location. WMBD programs and events are hosted nearly every month of the year.

Birdfeeding
Sep. 4th, 2025 02:54 pmToday is partly sunny and mild. It dribbled a bit last night, just enough to rinse some of the dust off the leaves, not enough to do any real good.
I fed the birds. I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches.
I put out water for the birds.
EDIT 9/4/25 -- We got the cover fully back over the septic tank. \o/
I saw a gray squirrel. This one looked adult or nearly so. Last fall we had a young one arrive, but it was only here for a month or two before disappearing, presumably eaten. I hope this one sticks around. We have grays occasionally, and they make a nice contrast to the established fox squirrels, but they've never managed a breeding population.
EDIT 9/4/25 -- I gathered a large amount of Shithouse Marigold seeds. :D
I've seen a gray catbird and a male rose-breasted grosbeak. It looks like the fall migration is starting.
EDIT 9/4/25 -- I gathered a large amount of small yellow and orange marigold seeds.
EDIT 9/4/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

Aug. 3rd, 2025 03:01 pmToday is mostly sunny and mild, a beautiful day. :D

I've seen a pair of mourning doves foraging in the cut grass.
EDIT 8/3/25 -- I did ass-busting amounts of effort to haul the hose around, watering the septic garden, new picnic table garden, patio plants, old picnic table garden, and a few other things around the house yard.
EDIT 8/3/25 -- We did more ass-busting amounts of effort to remove the old stretchy hose from the reel, then get the new tape hose onto the reel.

EDIT 8/3/25 -- I watered the telephone pole garden and savanna seedlings with a watering can. Both of this year's pawpaw seedlings are still alive! :D

Jul. 21st, 2025 03:17 pmToday is cloudy and warm. It rained yesterday.

EDIT 7/21/25 -- I planted 3 pots with 12 sweet cherry seeds.
It's been drizzling on and off.
EDIT 7/21/25 -- I potted up a white peach seed.
EDIT 7/21/25 -- I was going to go back out, but the drizzle has increased to light rain.
EDIT 7/21/25 -- I picked 3 red cherry tomatoes and 2 blackberries.
I saw a skunk out in the yard, not on the patio, and it scrammed when it saw me. That's what I'm aiming for: we stay out of each other's way. They're welcome to the farther parts the of the yard away from the house.
