Today is sunny and warm.

I fed the birds. I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches. They've been draining the hopper feeder daily and putting a dent in the thistle feeder.

I put out water for the birds.

My partner Doug is out mowing the house yard.

EDIT 6/11/25 -- I refilled the thistle feeder.

I started trimming grass around the edge of the strip garden, now that I have the big weeds pulled out.

EDIT 6/11/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 6/11/25 -- I took some pictures around the yard.

EDIT 6/11/25 -- I picked half a bag of mulberries in the south lot.

I've seen a skunk on the patio. I've seen a catbird and a phoebe. I heard a red-bellied woodpecker but didn't see it.

EDIT 6/11/25 -- I set up firestarters for the firepit.

I picked half a bag of mulberries along the west fence.

EDIT 6/11/25 -- We lit the bonfire for the esbat tonight. It took a little while to get going but then it burned pretty well. I'll try to check on it later.

Fireflies are out and I've seen a bat.

EDIT 6/11/25 -- I checked the bonfire. It's mostly burned down. I threw most of the stray ends into the middle, but it was still too warm for me to get all the way around. I'll need to go back out later.

Today is partly sunny and mild.

I fed the birds.  I haven't seen much activity yet.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 6/10/25 -- I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches, a male cardinal, and at least one mourning dove.

EDIT 6/10/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

I heard a blue jay screaming but didn't see it.

EDIT 6/10/25 -- I've been outside a couple of times to walk around the yard.  Fireflies are starting to come out, but it's still so light that they're hard to see.  I may try again later.  I've seen a bat over the south lot, and a skunk on the patio.

EDIT 6/10/25 -- We went out a little later to see the fireflies.  This is the most I've seen so far, earlier it was just ones and twos.  There aren't as many as there will be later in the season, but it's the first big flush so we're pleased to see them.

I am done for the night.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and houses finches plus a grackle.

I put out water for the birds.  Honeybees are mobbing the small metal birdbath again.

EDIT 6/3/25 --  I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 6/3/25 --  I watered the old picnic table, patio plants, new picnic table, and septic garden.

The temperature has cooled off considerably.

EDIT 6/3/25 --  I watered the septic garden and the notch in the prairie garden.

EDIT 6/3/25 --  I watered the savanna seedlings.

EDIT 6/3/25 --  I watered the new picnic table and the patio plants, which seemed most in need of water.

I've seen at least one fairly large bat flying around.  :D

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.

June is National Pollinator Month. The most famous pollinators are butterflies and bees. However, other animals such as bats and rodents also serve. Among birds, the best known are hummingbirds (North and South America), but sunbirds (Africa) and honeyeaters (Australia) are important too. Also bear in mind that caterpillars are nature's hot dogs, so attracting butterflies and moths will also feed birds. It takes about 10,000 caterpillars to fledge a clutch of chickadees! Here are some ways to celebrate National Pollinator Month ...

Loss of bats to lethal fungus linked to 1,300 child deaths in US, study says

Because bats feed on crop pests, their disappearance led to a surge in pesticide use. Research found a rise in infant mortality in areas where the bats had been wiped out.

Today is mostly sunny, humid, and warm.  We got a good soaking rain last night.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a flock of house finches, a lady cardinal, a mourning dove, and a fox squirrel.

EDIT 7/28/24 -- I planted 8 naked lady bulbs: 1 at the end of the old fishpond, 1 in the wagonwheel garden, 2 by the barrel garden, 2 in the purple-and-white garden, and 2 under the maple tree.

Two gladioli are blooming in the telephone pole garden: one red with white edges, one pink with white throat.

EDIT 7/28/24 -- I broke up branches in the ritual meadow and threw them in the firepit.

EDIT 7/28/24 -- I did a bit of work on the patio.

EDIT 7/28/24 -- I picked 1 yellow pear and 1 red cherry tomato.  A red zinnia is blooming in the septic garden.  :D

EDIT 7/28/24 -- I sowed some blue and yellow false indigo in the prairie garden.  It is a nitrogen fixer and insectary plant.

I saw 2 bats swooping around the edges of the yard.  One circled me, inches away, so close that I could see its body was lighter brown than its wings.  :D

As it is now dark, I am done for the night.

Today is partly cloudy and warm. It's supposed to rain tomorrow.

I haven't fed the birds yet. I've seen a large flock of house finches and a fox squirrel.

I've seen a tiger swallowtail.

We moved the picnic table into position near the septic garden. So that part is done for now.

EDIT 7/27/24 -- I fed the birds. I've seen a female cardinal.

My partner Doug is out mowing north of the driveway.

EDIT 7/27/24 -- I found small square pots to fit a tray, and filled those with potting soil, so I can plant the false indigo seeds later.

EDIT 7/27/24 -- Most of the yard south of the driveway has been mowed.

I got the labels made, seeds put into the little pots, and tray moved to the new picnic table.

I've seen a gray catbird.

EDIT 7/27/24 -- I did a bit of work on the patio.

I've seen at least 3 bats swooping around the perimeter of the yard.

As it is now dark, I am done for the night.

I watered the septic garden, telephone pole garden, and grass patch.

I saw bats over the house yard, south lot, and driveway.  Since they and I were all moving around, I don't know how many, but I would guess at least 2-3 of them.  :D

As it is now dark, I am done for the night.
