We still have lots of snow and cold. I had to stock up on more bird seed to keep up with demand.

Many Sparrows, Starlings, Blue Jays and Squirrels early today, plus some Juncos, Cardinals and Nuthatches.

Sighting a Siberian Superstar: Local birder secures rare red-flanked bluetail for life list

From long acquaintance with Tom, I know he doesn’t hesitate to go after these “rare birds.” This particular bird – a red-flanked bluetail – had been generating a lot of excitement, Tom noted, since making its unlikely appearance in Fairfax County, Virginia.

Tuesday 2/3/26

The birds continue to mob the feeders, with very little snow melt still.
Highlights today include a mixed flock of Cowbirds and Red Winged Blackbirds, neither of which has been around until today.

I also saw one Red shouldered hawk calling out to another one in the distance.

Today we ordered some landrace seeds from the Buffalo Seed Company. They have a lot of great options. This is also a step toward my goal of planting more landraces.  The dill and chives should attract pollinators, of which butterflies and moths make caterpillars to feed birds.  The sunflowers grow birdseed.  Cypress vine attracts hummingbirds and provides an option for nesting, although I haven't seen mine doing that.

I still have many birds at the feeders with all the snow on the ground. Many Sparrows, Blue Jays, Starlings, Mourning Doves and a few Carolina Wren, Chickadees and Woodpeckers.

Around dusk, I saw a huge flock of American Crows gathered all around a shopping plaza. There had to be around 40 crows.
