We have an introduction questionnaire. Now is a good time to fill it out, since lots of folks dust off their blogs in January, and [community profile] goals_on_dw which has lots of resources for New Year's resolutions and other goals.

We have an introduction questionnaire.  Now is a good time to fill it out, since lots of folks dust off their blogs in January, and [community profile] snowflake_challenge is running (one of Dreamwidth's biggest events).  This can also serve as a friending meme if you want to connect with more folks.

Hullo! It's really nice to see a community like this.

Username: Mouseboy; you can also call me Mousecky.
Your other online venues: My main homepage is my website, Gravetown.org. Mostly though, I'm on Discord.
Your approximate location: Melbourne, Australia.

What are your interests in birds? Much to the disappointment of my parents, my first word was "bird". I lived in a tiny rural town when I was a little boy, and every week we would throw a whole loaf of bread into the back yard. It would attract a whole wealth of different country bird species for me to ogle! I think that's what really got me loving birds. Now I appreciate the corvids and cockatoos and such that line the streets, and go to parks and reserves to see the birds.
How big is your yard / balcony / etc. if any? I actually have a pretty big yard, all things considered. Unfortunately, I don't know the size in square meters or feet.
What is your general habitat / climate zone? Google tells me I'm in a "temperate oceanic climate", so I'll go with that.
What do you do to attract birds, if anything? Nothing at the moment, but I plan to change this sometime soon!
What are some birds you often see in your area? Crows, magpies, ravens and corellas are the most common where I live. Seagulls also crowd around the shopping center and one of the local parks, and budgies are seen rarely too. One bird I'm not a fan of being here are the Indian mynas; they're awfully invasive. On a lighter note, now that the hotter half of the year is rolling around, the fruit should show up in my back yard eventually, and the rainbow lorikeets should show up again to eat!

What is your blog like? Mostly public save for fanfiction and silly/embarrassing rambles. Some things may be of interest and others may be entirely boring.
How active is it? I post semi-regularly, working to bump that up to actually regularly. I try to check my reading list daily.
What are your most common topics? I post RL things, things that are just on my mind at the time, and notably about Japanese visual kei musicians, as they are my main interest. I plan to post more about Kamen Rider. I want to post more furry things, too; my apologies if this makes anybody uncomfortable.
What kinds of friends would you like to attract? Anybody who would like to be friends, really. :-)

Hi. I live in Boston (Brighton), in a small apartment building. We moved in last summer, and installed a bird feeder a few weeks ago.

As we'd hoped, the cats love it, and they're safely inside our apartment, so there's no risk to the birds.

Regular visitors include red-bellied woodpeckers, mourning doves, the occasional starling, and many sparrows.

I used to do a lot of birdwatching, when I lived near a New York park that got a lot of birds, including a lot of waterbirds. I sort of drifted away from that, for various reasons, including vision problems and lack of convenient access to good birding locations. My eyes are better than they used to be, but then the pandemic happened... My partner half-seriously refers to the bird feeder as "cat TV," but I'm also enjoying it.

Beyond our bird feeder, this is one of the Boston neighborhoods that has a resident flock (or two) of turkeys. We also see the occasional hawk through our kitchen and study windows, perched on a branch waiting for something to happen on the hillside below.

What are your interests in birds? Just as a quiet thing to do, especially while the dog patrols her fenced area or when taking a break from yard work. I started using the Merlin app to help me ID last summer.  A bird sitting in the forsythia outside the window was super loud, and discovered it was a house finch. I also don't see very well but Merlin helps me learn their songs & calls.

How big is your yard / balcony / etc. if any? Medium yard. I'm on a corner with a huge verge. There are two big oak trees (a pin and a burr) in the front.  The inner part of the front yard is bordered by a box hedge, and lots of little birds like to live in it.

What is your general habitat / climate zone? 6a growing zone

What do you do to attract birds, if anything? I started giving them water over the summer because it was just so dry for so long. At winter solstice I began giving some generic seed on a dish in the front yard. I also have a compost pile, and I'm sure the robins etc are accustomed to grabbing a snack from the top of it.

What are some birds you often see in your area? A large group of house sparrows. Otherwise cardinals, jays, mourning doves, robins, crows.  In the summer there were others.

What is your blog like?  Mostly I use it to track my crochet projects, though I want/need to post more about gardening activities. I've bought some sunflowers to grow for the birds this year. :)

How active is it? Not super active - it depends on how often I start new projects (which aren't repeats - if I make something again, like a dishcloth, I just edit and add a note to the older post.
What are your most common topics? ^

Hi there! :D

Your other online venues: I'm really most active here. I'm on tumblr under the same username.

What are your interests in birds? I love birdwatching, and trying to identify which birds I see.
How big is your yard / balcony / etc. if any? I'm unfortunately in a balconyless studio apartment, though I fortunately live near several small parks and green spaces that allow for birdwatching. My mom lives nearby and loves to feed birds, though her HOA recently ruled that birdfeeders are no longer allowed, which she is very angry about.
What is your general habitat / climate zone? We're mostly considered "high desert." We're in between the mountains and the plains, so get a nice variety on the birds that show up here.
What do you do to attract birds, if anything? Not able to do much, since we don't have any outside access from our apartment. My mom, despite the HOA rules, still has one small feeder hidden on her patio, and also plants sunflowers and things to attract birds, plus still has birdbaths out as a water source.
What are some birds you often see in your area? We see hawks (mostly redtails) daily, plus songbirds (finches, goldfinches, sparrows, occasional others), corvids (ravens, crows, magpies, occasional blue jays or Steller's jays), and a lot of different ducks and geese on our nearby ponds. Also pelicans, which are SO BIG.

What is your blog like? Mostly public, not really themed around much. I post about a lot of daily life stuff, which means sometimes interesting things and sometimes not.
How active is it? Pretty active! I've posted every day for the last two years, and so far every day this year.
What are your most common topics? Writing, walks and hikes, work griping, things I'm reading or watching.
What kinds of friends would you like to attract? People who are active on DW and interested in the same things I am.

my interests in birds: I come from a family of birders on my Dad's side. My first word was "bird," definitely coached! I know how to use a bird book, and I have my own binoculars. Actually, they're a hand-me-down from my grandmother, some very nice Leitz. I always notice birds, but I can only remember the very common or very unusual ones without looking them up.

my yard: quiet suburb with mostly 1/4 acre yards, lots of feeders around. I have a squirrel "resistant" feeder that doesn't do crap: they hang on it to eat and also just shake it to get seed to the ground. The rabbits eat what the squirrels leave behind. I have 1 suet cage and a nyjer net. neighborhood cats come around rarely because we have a big dog.

general habitat: Midwest/Northeast mixed hardwoods and conifers. Lots of maples and oaks, plus interesting shrubbery. we get snow and cold weather 4-5 months a year, so migrations matter. Canada geese spend their summers on the local golf courses!

some birds I see: cardinals, blue jays, house sparrows, red-headed woodpeckers, nuthatches, mourning doves, misc finches, sometimes goldfinches. in the sky we have great blue herons, turkey vultures (of course), red-wing hawks, and sometimes bald eagles. owls are often heard and rarely seen. I think we have a big one (great-horned?) in the local patch of woods!

my blog: has been dead for years, but I'm trying to revive it. I mostly do tumblr and discord these days for fannish pursuits, games, and conventions. tumblr has great birbs. <3 my blog will always be disorganized, but feel free to leave comments whether you follow or not. I posted a brief intro for the Snowflake challenge on Jan 1st.
