Hi, I'm Jen! I'm super thrilled that I found this group because I literally just got a camera bird feeder for Christmas from my spouse! I've seen male and female Cardinals, Mockingbird, Dark Eyed Junco, Tufted Titmouse, Blue Jay, Streaky Seedeater, Red Bellied Woodpecker, and White Breasted Nuthatch. Also like 5 deer eating at the bottom of my feeder. And for awhile squirrels took over, but I put a cone underneath the bird feeder and haven't seen them since. It's been great fun!

What are your interests in birds? LOVE birds. I used to own finches, parakeets, a ringneck dove, lovebirds. I don't have any birds currently because I have a cat and will have a dog, but my new bird feeder is kind how I can get my bird love in now!
How big is your yard / balcony / etc. if any? Pretty big for suburbia. I have about half an acre behind my house, and a small woods inbetween back neighbors and I. Deer often mosey into my backyard.
What is your general habitat / climate zone? 4 Seasons.
What do you do to attract birds, if anything? Nothing. I just set up the bird feeder last week. They seem to have found it!
What are some birds you often see in your area? The birds mentioned above, but a lot of cardinals!!
What is your blog like? Mostly about my life, photos.
How active is it? Very. I've been on LJ/DW since 2001 and have posted regularly since.
What are your most common topics? Kids, spouse, cat. But most notably I'm getting a German Shepherd puppy in March. Woohoo.
What kinds of friends would you like to attract? People who ramble about their lives, and who post regularly.

>>I think I might change my birdfeeder because right now I have two tree-hanging ones and it's so hard to keep squirrels out.<<
The best way to deter squirrels is to keep them from reaching the feeder in the first place, or to serve foods they just don't like. If they can get on the feeder, then it's hard to keep them away from food they like.
One option for trees is to look for the kind of high overhanging branch that would be good for a tire swing. You can then hang a feeder from a long wire with a baffle on it.

Date: 2023-01-15 07:47 pm (UTC)Before, the squirrels were climbing up the pole no problem. But then we put this cone right underneath it, they would climb up and not figure out how to get up there. It's great!!!

>>Also like 5 deer eating at the bottom of my feeder.<<
Yeah, they'll do that, but sometimes it's bad for them, especially if there's corn in the mix. Deer have a bifocal digestive system, they eat rich green stuff in summer and dry stuff like buds and bark in winter, with different processes and microbiome for each. Too much rich food can make them sick or even kill them in winter, but deer are dumb and lazy and love the hell out of corn. 0_o

Good solution.

Oh, that's cool.

Awesome, that should net you a lot of different birds.
>>Nothing. I just set up the bird feeder last week. They seem to have found it!<<
Feeding them counts, and will definitely attract them. In fact a week is fast for coming to a feeder. If I take mine down in summer because there's no activity, then it often takes 2-3 weeks in fall after refilling before the birds really get back to it regularly. That means you probably have a high density of birds and they're motivated to search for new food sources.
