Loss of bats to lethal fungus linked to 1,300 child deaths in US, study says
Because bats feed on crop pests, their disappearance led to a surge in pesticide use. Research found a rise in infant mortality in areas where the bats had been wiped out.
The study highlights some crucial points:
* Bats serve enormously important roles in the environment.
* When they die, humans try to replace them with other things such as pesticides that are less effective and more harmful.
* Pesticides kill people. This is not news, but is among the most dramatic examples.
* The more biodiversity we lose, the more humans die. The connections are rarely this obvious, so it is very valuable to have this example. Just figure this is the kind of thing that commonly happens where you can't easily find the connections.
* Don't saw off the branch you're standing on.

>> Do you have any? <<
I don't have manufactured bat houses. I have big old trees, some of which have hollow spaces or loose bark. I expect the bats are roosting happily in there.
