A while back we cut back the forsythia.  The cardinals and sparrow army where very mad at me, because they liked to sit in it.  Then Friday we cut back the spirea. The cardinals had been hanging out there.  They were a bit agitated as we started to work there, so we looked all over for a nest.  There wasn't one.  After we finished they kept flying around the area and making a lot of noise.

They're sort of settled on a branch of the cedar tree now.

Today I also witnessed the grackles harassing a crow.

Likely the cardinals had already staked out territory, before building a nest. The trimmed bushes may not suit their criteria anymore.

Forsythia is horrid, though. I mean, I like the way it looks, but it gets out of control so quickly. The people who owned our house planted it next to the driveway, so it reaches for the car every year and has to be cut back. Good part of cutting it back - I found a whole gooseberry bush underneath! Now that it gets sun, it makes berries. (I have about 3 days to collect them in June, or the birds eat them all.)
