Three Weeks for Dreamwidth runs April 25-May 15. This year, I'll be posting about birds in honor of birdfeeding. Today's topic is Flowers and Herbs for Birds.




Flowers offer a variety of attractions for birds. Chief among these is nectar for the nectar-eaters, such as hummingbirds. Another major attraction is seeds. Flowers such as asters and sunflowers produce seeds that seed-eating birds love. Others produce fruit later, which attracts fruit-eating birds. Some giant flowers like cup plant and goldenrod have woody stems that insects burrow into, making those attractive to woodpeckers; and small birds will use the stems as perches.

Many herbs have particular appeal for birds, too. Some like alliums or echinacea produce seeds that birds like. Others have tubular red flowers for hummingbirds, such as bergamot or pineapple sage. Herbs in the carrot family, like dill and fennel, attract swallowtail butterfly caterpillars. Consider something such as Bee Lawn Mix, which includes low-growing herbs like thyme and yarrow, to make a lawn more useful habitat. Other good lawn plants include plantains, clover, wild violets, and even dandelions.
