Three Weeks for Dreamwidth 2022

Gardening for wildlife is among the most useful things you can do to help birds and other critters. Less obvious is that gardening for specific other species is a huge help to birds who eat them, so plant a caterpillar garden and make a mulch pile or leaf pile for invertebrates. Wrens and thrushes have been all over the leaves on my patio after the rain yesterday, hunting.

Some birds need special consideration when mowing. This is particularly true if you have a low-mow lawn or prairie patch. Some birds nest on the ground, so check for their nests before mowing. When you mow, that exposes insects, prompting thrushes and other insectivores to come hunt them. Watch to make sure they don't get in the way of a mower while you pass recently-mowed areas.
