Three Weeks for Dreamwidth runs April 25-May 15. This year, I'll be posting about birds in honor of
birdfeeding. Today's topic is Assorted Features.
Many things go into making a habitat inviting to birds and other wildlife. Aside from the constructed birdhouses and birdfeeders covered earlier, there are lots of natural features that you can find or make such as perches, snags, logs, brush piles, compost piles, manure piles, mulch piles, and rock piles. If you lack snags, you can create your own -- especially from unwanted trees -- and when they eventually fall, they become logs. Brush piles are the easiest to build. Natural Christmas trees make excellent brush piles after the holiday season. Just ask friends or neighbors for theirs; most people will be happy to get rid of the thing.

Ours has a frontloader one day a month that will fill your pickup truck or wagon for you. Another source is arborists or your local utility companies, who need somewhere to put the brush and chips after trimming trees. They will often deliver a load for free just to get rid of it. Here at Fieldhaven, my detritus food web is three days to apex.
