Three Weeks for Dreamwidth: Bird Fixtures
May. 2nd, 2023 12:17 amThree Weeks for Dreamwidth runs April 25-May 15. This year, I'll be posting about birds in honor of
birdfeeding. Today's topic is Bird Fixtures.
Bird fixtures include all kinds of artificial objects that humans erect to attract birds. There are also fixtures made for many other types of wildlife such as bats, squirrels, bees, butterflies, and other insects. These can be made from a variety of natural materials. In some cases, recycled plastic also works. Make sure everything is safe and nontoxic. Most fixtures are intended to supplement or replace natural resources that have become scarce due to habitat degradation or habitat loss.
Bird houses are among the most popular fixtures. These come in many styles. Lots of birds are cavity nesters, but some will nest on shelves, platforms, or other supports. Some also shelter in birdhouses during winter, and there are roost boxes too. Many other types of wildlife will also use provided housing.
