"The Five Books of Woodslore"

Whoever would learn
about nature must study
the Five Books of Woodslore.

The Brown Book of Earth
is written in sand and soil
and mud, holding the burrows
and tracks of animals that live
within or walk upon the ground.

The Green Book of Leaves
is written in stems and fronds,
moss and grass, disclosing
the passage of seasons and
all that eats of growing plants.

The White Book of Snow
is written in flurries and drifts
and ice crystals, the passages
of winds and animals that leave
traces of their actions in the frost.

The Blue Book of Water
is written in ponds and lakes,
streams and rivers, the bubbles
of turtles and circles of fish,
whispering of all that swims.

The Gray Book of Sky
is written in clouds and fog,
rain and snow, wind and calm,
telling the tale of the weather
in all its whimsy and power.

To walk in the wild is to be
part of the earth, the water,
the sky, to touch the leaves in
summer and the snow in winter.

It means opening to the world
and observing everything in it

Only then will the stories unfold.
