busy birds

The birds are active today. There was a fair sized flock of house finches flying back and forth between a small three and the feeders. Also sparrows, cardinals and a red-bellied woodpecker. Later there were chickadees, goldfinches, juncos and mourning doves. And I just saw a red-breasted nuthatch in the yard for the first time.

I haven't seen the red-breasted nuthatches, only the gray-and-white kind. Sounds pretty!

They're a little smaller than the white-breasted, and with a rusty breast. I'd only ever seen them in Milwaukee before, and was starting to think they were urban birds!

Apparently they cover most of North America.

But yeah, some birds do way better in urban habitats than others. Many cliff-nesters do if they're not edge-shy.

Funny, though, I checked my notes and found this, from October 2022:
"Yesterday, I saw red-breasted nuthatches. This year was the first time I'd seen them in the yard. They are not afraid of me at all."

I do not remember that at all.
