Domino Sparrow
Mar. 14th, 2023 12:09 pmI was having fun reading Wikipedia's list of individual birds. My favorite one was learning about the Domino Sparrow. Of course this was a house sparrow :b Folks in the Netherlands were setting up a giant domino display for Domino Day on November 14th, 2005. The goal was to set up 4.3 million dominoes to fall on the event day. Four days before the event was to happen, the fore-mentioned sparrow got into the expo building and landed on several dominoes causing 23,000 of them to fall over. After several attempts to remove the bird from the hall, it was eventually decided to use lethal force and the little sparrow became a posthumous folk hero after being shot by a hired hunter. Its stuff figure now lives at the Rotterdam Natural History Museum. I'm sure you bird lovers will be happy to know that this act did not go without retribution. Besides the event planners being besieged by animal rights protesters, the hunter was fined €200. A radio DJ even offered €3,000 to any person who could succeed in knocking over the dominoes before the event took place. That did not happen due to heightened security. Apparently to this day, the hunter still receives death threats over the incident.
