Yep, wild turkeys can fly surprisingly well for such a big bird. They like to roost in trees at night. Commercial turkey breeds can't fly, and can barely walk. Heritage turkey breeds are in between, and some can fly but few as well as wild turkeys.
My partner and I were once at a city park called Wood Lake, which has a number of built-up causeways separating pools of water, the main lake, and areas of marsh. We had already squeezed well to one side to let some very stroppy Canada geese pass by with their goslings, when we saw a threesome of wild turkeys also approaching. We resignedly moved as far to the side of the path as we could without falling into the water, and waited for them to pass by as well. But instead, with an absolutely tremendous and very startling whoosh of really huge wings, they rose up and flew just above our heads, ruffling our hair, to land in a snag sticking out of the lake. They were suddenly so huge, and suddenly actual birds!
Yay!
