Birdfeeding

Today is sunny and mild.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a flock of sparrows.

A purple crocus is blooming in the rain garden.  :D

I did more trimming in and around the wildflower garden.

EDIT 2/23/24 -- I did more trimming in and around the wildflower garden.

I saw a mourning dove in the forest garden. 

EDIT 2/23/24 -- I raked around the wildflower garden and hauled 4 trolleys of stems to the prairie garden.

EDIT 2/23/24 -- I finished the tidy-up trimming in and around the wildflower garden. \o/

EDIT 2/23/24 -- I took a few pictures in the savanna.

I pulled sticks and cut brush away from the daffodils and snowdrops that have seeded themselves into the gravel parking lot.  There is still much more work to do there, but this is a start.

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.

How do the birds seem lately? Mourning doves are a favorite of mine.

More active now, which may be due to having eaten up available wild foods. Spring is a lean time.

I'm seeing flocks of sparrows and mourning doves, and once a flock of mixed blackbirds. Cardinals continue to visit. I've seen a house finch once. At least a few robins are around. I've heard killdeer calling lately.

Killdeer are normally shorebirds. We have them here because this area used to be marsh (which is still disputed by nature several times a year) and they like the ephemeral pools and drainage ditches. They nest in my yard occasionally -- they're ground nesters -- so if I'm walking the yard in early spring and find nests then we wait on mowing.

Aww, they are adorable. I love their big eyes. And they have a beautiful pattern. :)
