Birdfeeding

Today is sunny, breezy, and mild.

I fed the birds.  I haven't seen any today though.

I brought in two ice plants to see if I can overwinter them.   Sometimes it works. 

EDIT 10/21/23 -- I brought in the lemongrass to see if it'll overwinter.

I picked up a trolley of sticks and dumped it in the firepit.

As it is almost suppertime, I am done for the night.

My sparrow army, which moves around more over the summer, has been in the yard regularly. They have been splashing in the water dish a lot.

That's good to hear.

I haven't seen sparrows here in months, go figure. It's been all house finches.

I have a box hedge around the front yard, the spirea and forsythia. Two huge oaks and an old cedar. Lots of birds liked to hang out here in the winter before I started feeding them.

I have mixed hedge and many different trees including maples, mulberries, hackberries, and black walnuts. There are lots of birds around. I think they haven't bothered with the feeders much because there is so much food in the yard, and it's harvest season so there are soybeans and corn all over too. When the weather turns nasty, then the birds get lazier and mob the feeders because it's a sure thing.

Normally they start coming to the feeders some time in September and by October they're regularly active. This year, not so much. But the flowers are blooming out of season too -- I have a columbine with flowers on it now. Go figure.
