Make a Birdwatching Spot
Oct. 10th, 2023 12:29 amWatching birds is a lot more fun if you are comfortable while you do it. You can make an indoor or outdoor birdwatching spot.
Outdoors, you might choose a deck, a treehouse, or a gazebo if you have one. Some people like hunting blinds for this purpose, on the ground or up a tree. A guy near me has a patch of prairie bird habitat with a lean-to at one end that may be for birdwatching or hunting. Another option is to put a seat in a spot that is somewhat concealed by bushes or other plants.
Indoors, you need a window with a good view. A picture window is ideal, but anything big enough to see well is okay. Put a comfy chair and a table where you can see out the window. A bookcase or stand is helpful to hold bird guides and other tools. Keep your binoculars here if you have some. A camera is helpful to record what you see. Some folks like to include art supplies. You might also want a bird checklist or any other recordkeeping. Many instructions to create a reading nook work just as well for a birdwatching spot as long as you include a window.
In either case, offer something to attract birds. Water is ideal because everything needs it. A birdbath, dish on the ground, or wildlife pond will all work. In winter you'll need something to keep the water liquid. A feeding station should ideally include multiple types of food and feeders to attract a variety of wildlife. A good starting point is a hopper or fly-through feeder with mixed seed plus a specialty feeder with something else such as thistle seed, suet, or peanuts. It depends on your local birds and what you want to see. Some folks hate squirrels and try to deter them, some don't care, and others put up a feeder just for the squirrels. Window birdfeeders will bring them extra close!
