Today is mostly sunny, humid, and warm. It rained yesterday and last night.

I fed the birds. I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

I dropped the Java moss into the trough pond. It floated. If it doesn't sink after absorbing water, I may need to find a rock to put on it.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 6/8/25 -- I did a bit of weeding in the septic garden and new picnic table.

EDIT 6/8/25 -- I did some work around the patio.

EDIT 6/8/25 -- I sowed cypress vine seeds around the support wire and in the septic garden.  Some of the earlier ones have sprouted, but I plant extra because they often get eaten.

I gathered a few poppy seeds.

The first Asiatic lilies are blooming, white with pink tips, around the telephone pole.  :D  Daylilies have buds.

I've seen a male cardinal at the hopper feeder.

Lots of things are sprouting in the septic garden.  \o/

EDIT 6/8/25 -- I picked half a bag of mulberries in the south lot and along the front fence.

I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches plus a mourning dove.

EDIT 6/8/25 -- I picked half a bag of mulberries along the front fence and in the savanna.

EDIT 6/8/25 -- I pulled weeds from the tulip bed.

Today is cloudy, mild, and damp.  It rained yesterday, and probably more last night.

I fed the birds.  I haven't seen much activity though.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 6/7/25 -- I did a bit of work on the patio.

It's been spitting or drizzling for much of the day, and is picking up again now.

EDIT 6/7/25 -- I put out more food for the birds.

I've seen several sparrows and house finches, a catbird, and at least one mourning dove.

The 'Mr. Stripey' tomato has green fruit.  :D

Today is cloudy, mild, and wet.

I fed the birds. I didn't get through the whole morning routine before it started to rain. We need the rain, but the timing was annoying.

EDIT 6/4/25 -- I put out water for the birds.

There were mosquito larvae in the red birdbath, so I dumped it and refilled it. I'll need to add a piece of mosquito dunk later.

EDIT 6/4/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches plus a mourning dove.

EDIT 6/4/25 -- I went back out for a walk. We've gotten a significant amount of rain. :D

I saw an indigo bunting.

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.

Today is mostly sunny, windy, and hot.  :P  A beautiful day to stay indoors and write!  :D  Today is the Poetry Fishbowl on "Gentleness Is Strength" if you want to drop by and join the fun.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and houses finches plus a grackle.

I put out water for the birds.  Honeybees are mobbing the small metal birdbath again.

EDIT 6/3/25 --  I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 6/3/25 --  I watered the old picnic table, patio plants, new picnic table, and septic garden.

The temperature has cooled off considerably.

EDIT 6/3/25 --  I watered the septic garden and the notch in the prairie garden.

EDIT 6/3/25 --  I watered the savanna seedlings.

EDIT 6/3/25 --  I watered the new picnic table and the patio plants, which seemed most in need of water.

I've seen at least one fairly large bat flying around.  :D

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.

I've been so busy at work lately I have not had time to post.    We are still getting beautiful weekday weather and rain/wind/cold every weekend so that's been very disappointing.

Quite a few birds around, including daily Red bellied and Downy Woodpeckers on the suet along with the usual Blue Jays, House Sparrows, Common Grackles, Mourning Doves

The Mute Swans had 6 cygnets  and a few weeks later 3 remain.  I bet the local snapping turtle grabbed some of babies.

We saw a turtle in the garden the other day.  She did a number on my tomato plants, I may have to buy some new ones.

Backyard feeders changed the shape of hummingbird beaks, scientists say

According to a recent study in Global Change Biology, a journal focused on environmental change, the use and prevalence of hummingbird feeders — like those red and clear plastic ones filled with homemade sugar water — changed the size and shape of the birds' beaks. The range of the hummingbird also spread from the southern part of California all the way up the West coast into Canada.

"Very simplified, the bills get longer and they become more slender, and that helps to have a larger tongue inside that can get more nectar from the feeder at a time," says Alejandro Rico-Guevara, a professor of biology at the University of Washington and senior author on the study.

June is National Pollinator Month. The most famous pollinators are butterflies and bees. However, other animals such as bats and rodents also serve. Among birds, the best known are hummingbirds (North and South America), but sunbirds (Africa) and honeyeaters (Australia) are important too. Also bear in mind that caterpillars are nature's hot dogs, so attracting butterflies and moths will also feed birds. It takes about 10,000 caterpillars to fledge a clutch of chickadees! Here are some ways to celebrate National Pollinator Month ...

Scientists believe penguin poop might be cooling Antarctica — here's how

In a paper published on Thursday in the journal Communications Earth and Environment, they describe how ammonia wafting off the droppings of 60,000 birds contributed to the formation of clouds that might be insulating Antarctica, helping cool down an otherwise rapidly warming continent.

Today is cloudy and cool.  It rained yesterday.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 5/29/25 -- I set out the pots of thyme to be planted later today.

EDIT 5/29/25 -- I planted two golden lemon thymes, one silver thyme, and one lime thyme in the goddess garden.  :D  The first two are old favorites, the last is new to me.

EDIT 5/29/25 -- I went back outside to do more yardwork, but it's drizzling now.  I did take a few pictures of the goddess garden with the new thyme plants.

EDIT 5/29/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 5/29/25 -- I set up the last of the wire planters with already potted flowers.  The narrow pots I have are awkward in the wider planters.  I think for future reference, I'll watch for wider, lower pots either in late-season sales or possibly next spring.  Those are good for combination plantings anyhow, which I like making.

EDIT 5/29/25 -- I trimmed grass along the east end of the new picnic table.

I've seen a male cardinal and a male indigo bunting.

EDIT 5/29/25 -- I filled 2 of the 6 taupe trough pots with half composted manure and half potting soil, then put them at the east end of the new picnic table.

It's drizzling again.

EDIT 5/29/25 -- I filled 2 more of the 6 taupe trough pots with half composted manure and half potting soil, then put one at the east end of the new picnic table and one at the west end.

It's drizzling again.

EDIT 5/29/25 -- I filled the last 2 of the 6 taupe trough pots with half composted manure and half potting soil, then put them at the west end of the new picnic table.

I've seen a fox squirrel.

EDIT 5/29/25 -- I sowed seeds in the taupe trough pots: Edible Flower Mix in one, Fragrant Mix flowers in one, 'Early Giant' leeks in one, 'Vine Peach' cantaloupe in one, borage and parsley in one, dill and 'Fluid Evolution' cilantro in one.

I watered the newly planted things.

As it is now dark, I am done for the night.

Today is cloudy and mild.

I haven't fed the birds yet, but I've seen sparrows and house finches at the feeders.

EDIT 5/27/25 -- I fed the birds. I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches, a catbird, and a mourning dove. Three fox squirrels were chasing each other around the trees. :D I heard a blue jay but didn't see it.

I put out water for the birds.

An iris is blooming brilliant primary yellow under the maple tree. :D It smells slightly sweet but not as strong as some others.

EDIT 5/27/25 -- I planted 4 green pear seeds in pots.

I watered the patio plants including the strawberry towers.

EDIT 5/27/25 -- I watered the septic garden.

EDIT 5/27/25 -- Of the 6 pots of Ozark coneflowers sowed 2/3/25, 4 pots had two sprouts and 2 pots had one sprout, making this among the most successful winter efforts and definitely one to repeat. I planted these toward the north end of the west strip of the prairie garden.

Yellow coreopsis and pink sweet William are blooming in the prairie garden. :D

EDIT 5/27/25 -- Of the 6 pots of prairie coneflowers sowed 2/3/25, 1 pot had two sprouts and 4 pots had one sprout, making this among the most successful winter efforts. I planted these toward the north end of the west strip of the prairie garden.

EDIT 5/27/25 -- Of the 6 pots of grayhead prairie coneflowers and 6 pots of black-eyed Susans sowed 2/23/25, none sprouted, so I probably won't bother with those again.

I sowed 6 pots with side-oats grama, 6 pots with river oats, and 6 pots with switchgrass

EDIT 5/27/25 -- Of the 6 pots of purple prairie clover sowed 2/3/25, 1 had a single sprout and 1 had several sprouts.  Another pot for a different species also had 1 sprout, not sure how that happened.  I planted those in the notch of the prairie garden.

EDIT 5/27/25 -- I watered the newly planted things in the prairie garden.

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.
