Birdfeeding

Today is sunny and mild.

I fed the birds. I've seen a fox squirrel and a starling. I heard something that sounded like an owl (who-who-what?) but not one I recognized. EDIT 2/20/23: This is probably a collared dove.

I put out water for the birds.

I took a few pictures of the spring flowers.

I started cutting brush around the birdgift tree.

A few of the honeysuckles are starting to leaf out.

We have a pair of collared doves living in our spruce tree in our backyard. When we first heard them years ago we mistook their Woo-WHO-who for owls. Collared doves are very lovely and derpy and sweet to watch. They pair-bond for life. The pair will peck around then settle in a crook of a tree for hours.

I hope so too! They're really skittish and fly off at the slightest noise. With time they will hang around longer if they feel safe.

Listen for what sounds like someone choking on a kazoo but nasal. That's their takeoff/landing call. It makes me grimace every time.

My mourning doves make bizarre panicky sounds when flushed.

The mourning dove panic is lovely in comparison.

There has to be something in their pitch that scrapes my nerves.

Jays and starlings screaming all morning = "so loud today!"

Single collared dove kazoo = "uuuugggghhhhh!!!"
