killdeer?!
Feb. 18th, 2023 12:44 pmI have never heard (or seen) a killdeer in the city until last night. It was across the street, in a large yard with only one tree at the edge (our neighborhood is older and has a lot of huge old shade trees). I would have thought I misheard, but luckily it called again and the Merlin app's sound ID confirmed.
Have seen 4 downy woodpeckers at the same time in the yard over the last several days.
I've been scrutinizing the sparrow army. Sometimes it is all house sparrows, sometimes others join. The house sparrows are so loud and more numerous so it is hard. I caught a good look and Merlin sound ID on a couple song sparrows. There's another that I keep seeing that is a bit reddish. Maybe a house finch? I had them all summer and they disappeared in fall.
A few juncos have moved into the hedge, that is new.
Snow earlier this week made for this better bird viewing overall. Easier for me to see against the snow than brown grass.
