Birdfeeding

Today is cloudy, chilly, and wet.  It rained last night, off and on today too.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches, a male cardinal, and a downy woodpecker.

EDIT 12/31/24 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

I put out a fresh peanut suet cake.

I am done for the night.

We'll be dropping to highs of about 0-10 F (-12 to -16 C) with snow for the next several days, so we're expecting increased activity soon.

Yikes, that is cold! *shiver*

I suggest putting out plenty of suet, peanut butter, or other high-fat foods for hungry birds. Does your yard have anywhere for them to shelter out of the wind?

We have two big spruce trees, one sheltering the feeders out back and another in the side yard. The birds around here don't seem to like suet. They will devour black oil sunflower seeds and peanuts.

It's frosty, but the real cold is still to come, usually later in January. (Hopefully not down to -40...)

Evergreens make great winter shelter.

Huh. Local tastes do vary. Sunflower and peanut are good high-energy foods too.

Yeah, that is seriously cold.
