Birdfeeding

Today is sunny and mild.  However, the field south and east of us is being harvested, so I don't know how much yardwork I'll get done.  Before lunch, I saw thick clouds of dust and soybean hair billowing through the yard.  :P  Now there's a glittering scum of the stuff over all the water sources outside, and no point changing any of it until tomorrow.

I fed the birds.  I've seen several house finches.  I heard a bluejay screaming but didn't see it.

I put out water for the birds and watered a few plants.

EDIT 10/3/24 -- I planted 8 daffodils (4 plain and 4 mixed) around one of the oak seedlings in the savanna.  I'm running  low on the mixed ones and need to restock soon.

EDIT 10/3/24 -- I planted 8 daffodils around the next oak seedling in the savanna.  I am now out of mixed bulbs.

EDIT 10/3/24 -- I watered the patio plants, picnic table, and septic garden.

I picked a cherry tomato, I think this is the 'Watermelon' one, which my partner Doug really liked.

EDIT 10/3/24 -- I watered the seedlings in the savanna, prairie patch, telephone pole garden, and grass patch.

I saw a male downy woodpecker drumming away at the woody brown stalk of a sunchoke.  It sounded like banging a screen door, surprisingly metallic.  The dead leaves and hollow stem made a terrific racket as he excavated for insects.  This is why good-sized plants with hollow woody stems, like sunchoke or goldenrod, make such bird magnets.  Insects like to hide inside the stems, so woodpeckers and other insectivores are attracted to them.  :D

EDIT 10/3/24 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

As it is almost suppertime, I am done for the night.
