Photos: Back Toward the House
I took these pictures while walking back toward the house.
This hackberry tree stands at the edge of the savanna near the parking lot.

That knothole definitely leads to a hollow inside. I've seen fox squirrels disappear into it.

A male downy woodpecker drums on a branch, near the fork above the utility pole.

This is the Home Base mulberry tree, and one of our several Huorns.

The leaves are as golden as sunlight.

The goddess garden is covered with leaves. I think the moss roses have died out, but the thyme is still green.

The forest garden is full of small birds such as sparrows and house finches.

At the base of the bushes, near the lower right corner of the picture, a couple of small birds perch around the water dish that lies under the outlet hose from the sump pump. I've been filling the bowl with a water jug because of the drought.

Here is a closer view of several small birds in the forest garden. There's one on the hopper feeder, a couple toward the top of the picture, and more hidden amidst the branches.

The rain garden at the corner of the house is dying back. The columbine still has green leaves and its weirdly twisted seedheads -- it was blooming in late summer, go figure. The heuchera has burgundy leaves, barely visible under the layer of fall leaves.
