Fascinating. I've seen tulips spread a little, but not a lot. Then again, I'm not usually planting species tulips and that matters.

Rabbits have often mowed my tulips down to nothing. :( Sometimes it helps to scatter them around, or interplant with unpalatable companions such as alliums.
